The Service further improved its mobility during the 1940's when a number of stations were supplied with Hillman Huskies, a very popular and successful vehicle used for many years until it was replaced in 1963 by the famous Land Rover.
On August 1st 1952 the Coastguard Office at Penzance was closed down and the station at St Just then became the Head Office under the command of District Officer W.J.C. Bridger. During this period, cliff rescues were carried out by regular Officers from local stations with manpower being supplied by members of the L.S.A.
The last Officer on duty at Sennen was Charlie Crossman (1948 -1953) the station being reduced to a severe weather watch only, this duty performed by Auxiliary Coastguards until 1980. The last ever watch was carried out by Timothy George on April 18th of that year when it was decided that as all vessels now had radio transmitters a visual watch from this station was no longer required. When the main station was closed down the Coastguard Houses were sold to West Penwith Council in 1954.
